Director, Engineering - Data, DWH, Cloud Migration, BI & Analytics

Location: This position is remote friendly for the right candidate, while most of the teams are co-located in Chicago, IL and Dallas, TX.

This role is part of the Carelon Data Team, supporting Carelon Medical Benefits Management, a benefit-management leader in Illinois and a proud member of Elevance Health's family of companies. Our platform delivers significant cost-of-care savings across an expanding set of clinical domains, including radiology, cardiology, and oncology, etc.

The Director, Engineering is responsible for strategic oversight and delivery of application and system solutions for client group, business unit or corporate department and utilizing various customer technology platforms. This role will help create unified data ecosystems that support whole health experience, by leveraging data as a strategic asset to improve customer outcomes.

How you will make an impact:

  • Planning, directing, and controlling several teams of resources and initiatives to accomplish the objectives and requirements defined by senior technology and product management across multiple teams.
  • Interfaces with key Information Technology (IT) solution vendors; develops strategies and facilitates performance measurement plans to optimize vendor performance and outcomes. 
  • Develops Technology Plan and Forecast for an enterprise application, enterprise-wide tool, infrastructure, or a center or domain that is equivalent in scope and complexity, and/or manages day to day operations for a major portion of a functional area or department. Scope project as needed based on business product expectations and available resources.
  • May manages multiple systems or products of varying capital and/or level of responsibility and complexity.
  • Hands on experience with the latest cloud-based AWS technology and familiarity with the latest industry trends and technology for enterprise data needs.
  • Data and Architectural leadership with knowledge of both legacy and modern cloud-based data technologies and applications
  • Ability to mentor/guide teams on data best practices, design solutions, standards, and guidelines.
  •  Ability to effectively communicate technology problems/solutions to business partners and senior leadership and translate high level directives into technical approaches consumed by technical groups.
  • Present and communicate the architecture solutions, architecture patterns to technical and non-technical partners, and demonstrate how they will enable business needs.
  • Establishes business objectives and integrates operational plans.
  • Engages with customers to understand new product as well as enhancements to existing products.
  • Works with IT Leadership and business to identify new product.
  • Negotiates the resolution of intra-organizational issues in the balanced best interests of the business.
  • Establishes and maintains collaborative relationships with key business partners.
  • Hires, trains, coaches, counsels, and evaluates performance of direct reports.
  • Manage Enterprise Data Warehouse for implementation and support.
  • Lead Data QA, Metrics and KPI for Data Engineering, Manage Data as a Service.
  • Lead Data Automation capabilities for cross verticals in Data Engineering.
  • Lead efforts for Cloud Data Migration and platform modernization initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications:

Requires an BA/BS degree in Information Technology, Computer Science or related field of study and a minimum of 7 years of IT management experience; or any combination of education and experience, which would provide an equivalent background.

Preferred Skills, Capabilities and Experiences:

  • 10+ years of experience leading data and digital solutions architecture for end-to-end.
  • 5+ years of large-scale digital transformation & AWS Cloud migration hands on experience with multiple technology areas like API, Microservices, Event Streaming, Logging & Monitoring, Databases (SQL, NOSQL), Containers, Serverless Frameworks, AI & ML etc.), API Platform (Apigee), Kafka, AMQ.
  • Top-tier professional with ability to make architecture and design decisions and tradeoffs for solution architecture that looks across the applications landscape and adheres to enterprise standards.
  • Knowledge of enterprise data models, information classification, meta-data models, taxonomies, and ontologies.
  • Hands-on experience in designing and implementing data pipelines in cloud platforms; in-depth knowledge of various core AWS services such as IAM, Cloud Formation, EC2, S3, ECS, EMR/Spark, SQS, SNS, Glue suite-ETL job, Data Catalog, Crawler, Data sync, Cloud Health, CloudWatch, Lambda, Athena, Quicksight, DMS and Redshift.
  • Experience working with data migration to cloud data platforms (like Snowflake or data bricks) from Sybase, and SQL Server is a plus.
  • Good knowledge of cloud migration with robust security management and application monitoring process is a plus.
  • AWS/GCP certification, preferred.
  •  Experience in health care industry, strongly preferred.
