Provides leadership to the Commercial and Specialty Business Division (CSBD) Underwriting team for The State of New York as well as financial leadership and decision support to both sales and the State Plan President and strategic consultation for new sales and account renewals.

The ideal candidate will be able to leverage resources and partnerships, internally and externally (clients and consultants), and act as a key contributor to commercial business growth for the State of New York.

The RVP is responsible for leading, developing ad overseeing the implementation of policies and strategies that maintain a balance of profitability, growth, and risk management for the state. In addition to oversite of all underwriting activities for the New York Small and Large Group business segments.

Essential duties include but are not limited to:

  • Monitors and influences the profitability of renewal and prospect employer groups in accordance with Corporate Guidelines

  • Adjusts business strategies in response to competitor and regulatory changes and challenges

  • Establishes underwriting policies and rating procedures and communicates any changes to staff and ensures compliance

  • Oversees the issuance of standard financial arrangement contracts and creates wording for non-standard or new financial arrangements

  • Utilizes in-depth knowledge of formulas, trending, reserving procedures, and claims to implement and consult with sales staff on the appropriateness of specific financial arrangements, ASO arrangements, and reinsurance provisions

  • Participates in strategic planning and management decisions

  • Develops and manages department budget within Corporate guidelines

  • Develops relationships with external business partners and clients

  • Hires, trains, coaches, counsels, and evaluates the performance of direct reports

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in related field required, MBA preferred

  • A minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in underwriting, financial reporting, analysis, strategic planning, and leadership experience.

  • Strategic thinker with a broad and deep understanding of the healthcare industry

  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills, including the ability to present to executive leadership and externally

  • Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills, including relationship management, persuasion, and negotiation skills

  • ASO and Reinsurance underwriting.

  • Strong software skills and demonstrated planning, project management, analytical and research skills are strongly preferred

  • Travel – up to 10%

Preferred Skills, Capabilities, and Experiences:

  • Experience with the New York market is highly preferred.

  • New York State regulatory experience across all business lines

    (Commercial, Labor, Municipalities and PEO, ASO, and Fully Insured)

  • The ability to report to the NYC office is highly preferred.

Internal Job Title: RVP Underwriting II

For candidates working in person or remotely in the below locations, the salary* range for this specific position is $185,600 to $278,400.

Locations:  Jersey City, NJ; New York City, NY; Ithaca, NY and Westchester County, NY
