Staff Vice President, Strategic Communications

Location:   May be located in any Elevance Health PulsePoint office preferably in Indianapolis, IN, Atlanta, GA, Mason, OH, Richmond, VA, Norfolk, VA or Woodland Hills, CA.

This role requires associates to be in-office at least 3 days per week, fostering collaboration and connectivity, while providing flexibility to support productivity and work-life balance. Summary

The Staff Vice President, Strategic Communications leads a team responsible for the daily articulation of Elevance Health’s corporate reputation narrative, driving the strategic positioning of our messages to ensure consistency, impact, and resonance with diverse audiences. This leader partners across the organization, working closely with business unit leaders, subject matter experts, marketing, public affairs, clinical, and research teams to shape, refine, and deploy messaging that reflects our mission, advances our brand, and strengthens our corporate reputation.

The role oversees the creation and governance of a collaborative, cross-functional messaging framework, ensuring that all enterprise media communications align with our strategic priorities and reflect a unified voice.

Position Responsibilities

  • Lead the development of media-ready messaging frameworks that position Elevance Health as a trusted leader in healthcare innovation, experience, and value.

  • Collaborate cross functionally with senior leaders, marketing, clinical, government affairs, and research teams to integrate strategic messages into public relations and brand reputation initiatives and campaigns.

  • Oversee the creation and maintenance of a centralized messaging library, ensuring real time access to the latest narratives, talking points, proof points, and data for use across the organization.

  • Craft high impact, data driven narratives that articulate our unique value propositions for key audiences, including media, policymakers, customers, and stakeholders.

  • Prepare PR talking points and Q and A materials for controversial or sensitive business issues to ensure consistent and effective communication across the organization.

  • Manage relationships with external agencies, research partners, and consultants to support message testing, refinement, and amplification.

  • Develop and execute an annual earned media content strategy, ensuring alignment with core business priorities and audience needs.

  • Establish and track key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure message resonance, reach, and impact on corporate reputation.

  • Serve as a strategic advisor to executives and cross functional teams on message positioning, ensuring alignment with long term brand and business goals.

  • Create and manage processes to get appropriate input and review of message collateral from key internal business stakeholders.

  • MS/MBA preferred.

Position Requirements

  • Requires a BA/BS in journalism, communications, marketing, public relations, business, or other related field; 10 years or more working in healthcare public relations in either corporate and/or agency environments; or any combination of education and experience which would provide an equivalent background.

Preferred Skills, Capabilities and Experiences

  • 15+ years of progressive experience in strategic communications, messaging development, or corporate affairs, with at least 7 years in a senior leadership role.

  • Proven ability to create and manage messaging frameworks that directly enable successful media relations outcomes.

  • Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills, with the ability to distill complex concepts into compelling, media-friendly messages.

  • Experience collaborating in a matrixed organization with PR, marketing, research, and executive leadership teams.

  • Strong understanding of media dynamics, reputation management, and the role of messaging in shaping public perception.

  • Demonstrated ability to influence and build consensus among diverse stakeholders.

  • Proficiency in message measurement, analytics, and applying insights to strengthen positioning.

Corporate Title:  Staff VP Public Relations

For candidates working in person or virtually in the below location(s), the salary* range for this specific position is $180,480 to $324,864
